NAVIGATING NEWCASTLE
While it may not be immediately apparent that this is an illustration, I still consider this to be a form of illustration, since it combines elements of illustration and collage. The image is actually a few photos melded together (I'm not quite good enough to get the scene perfect in one shot) and then combines a collage and illustration I created and digitally placed on the book. There's also a few other subtle elements at play here such as the spine of the book which reads the words "Navigating Newcastle" made out of pin holes in the reversed dusk jacket of the book (even though it is actually created in the dusk jacket, I had to also add it on digitally since I couldn't get it in sharp focus with the background). I really like this image and it all seemed to work out really well - it's unusual, even in Newcastle to get a relatively empty early spring sunny day on the beach, the only thing I would have liked to have captured would have been a surfer on a wave in the background, but I didn't want to fake that one, so I left the background as is.
