GetUp! spear-headed the Bring David Hicks home campaign, for which they hired myself through SpeakOut to create the design for. Initally it began with a Full page Advertisement in the Australian Newspaper (in addition to versions in some strategic regional papers) for which we came up with the image of Lady Justice (actually the statue that stands outside the old Brisbane Courthouse) with the arm holding the scales knocked off - the insinuation being that she's left just holding the sword. It was a pretty good metaphor for what was (and still is) happening at Guantanamo - unmetered punishment. Given the speed at which these things happen, it was an extremely tight turnaround so within 24 hours and little sleep we were lucky enough to end up with an image that became a leading symbol for the campaign. Months later, and with Hicks seeming forced into a confession, GetUp! published another ad. This time we slightly modified the image to include a Kangaroo being speared by the sword (imagery which, right up until the last minute we weren't sure would make it through the legal department of the Australian) which suggested both the denial of justice to an Australian and at the same time brought to mind the term "Kangaroo Court" which seemed a pretty apt way of describing the goings on of Guantanamo.

The orange image to the right is a poster based on the ad that was handed out at rallies and put in shop windows to promote the campaign.
