THIS IS NOT ART

This Is Not Art is an annual event held in Newcastle. It is Australia's largest annual gathering of young media makers, musicians, artists, writers, and troublemakers. This Is Not Art is the umbrella body for several other festivals including The National Young Writers Festival, Electrofringe (a festival of new media and digital arts), The National Student Media Conference, Sound Summit (formerly the national Independent Electronic Labels Conference), Radio Active (Independent Radio Conference), The New Media: Critical
Approaches Conference (a postgraduate student conference) and The Oceania Indymedia Conference.

I've had a long association with the design of the festival, having produced the festival design from the inception of the Writers Festival in 1998 (from which this festival grew out of) and continuing on to producing the design for This Is Not Art till 2003 (excluding the 2001 design). I always tried to grow the design organically from year to year, especially within the inside of the program, playing with and expanding on ideas used in the previous years design. Typically the design on each of these was extremely rushed, taking place in about three days in a small window between the editing of the program being finished and the start of the festival
