PATTERN RECOGNITION
Pattern Recognition was an exhibition presented collaboratively by Object: Australian Centre for Craft and Design and Craft Queensland. After showing In Sydney and Brisbane, the exhibition then spent the next year or so touring regional galleries throughout Australia.
This was the catalogue produced for the tour of the show. Originally I'd designed this so that the cover had a dye-cut in the text so that the pattern in the underneath page would show through revealing an intense pattern in the text "Pattern Recognition". For this reason, I'd purposely kept the cover quite minimal, though there's an underlining and subtle pattern weaved through it that is then repeated on the inside pages. I liked the idea of having a fairly subtle cover that reveals a hint of the colour explosion that hits you when you open the booklet and are bombarded with the intense floral pattern on the inside spread.
In addition to designing the catalogue, I was also one of the artists included in the show (for which I made a video / animation piece that you can view on youtube here ) so I had a fair bit of patterns and designs lying around that I could utilise and combine into this work. The exhibition itself uses the book Pattern Recognition by William Gibson as a cue to look at the use of patterns in the work of various craft, design and visual artists.
