The following is a brief introduction to myself and my work experience, followed by an overview of my work history.

 

I am a Graphic Designer and illustrator with 11 years experience working for organisations in Newcastle, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and London. After living and working in Brisbane for the last 3 years I am currently based in South East Asia where I am continuing to work for organisations in Australia and abroad. For the last two and a half years I have worked as a designer for SpeakOut Creative (Brisbane) in addition to my freelance work. Prior to that I have worked in London as a graphic designer for Oven Digital, a new media company and Trinity College of Music and freelanced for many other organisations. In addition to my work as a graphic designer I have significant experience both working for and volunteering in the cultural and community arts field. My Art and design has been featured in exhibitions at the Australian Centre of the moving image, the Newcastle Region Art Gallery, Object Gallery, Craft Queensland and many other smaller galleries.

I have extensive experience working in both print and online environments with a focus in working for cultural and arts groups. Organisations I have worked for include The Australia Council, GetUp!, Eyeline magazine, Spinach7 Magazine, Newcastle City Council, FBI radio, DEETYA, the ABC, Noise Festival, This Is Not Art Festival, the Newcastle Region Art Gallery and many more. In addition to my professional work, I also produce the website Object Not Found recently exhibited at the Australian Centre
of the Moving Image as part of their 2004 Australian Art Now exhibition. I also produce the site Art Crimes, a dossier on instances of art vandalism and attacks in galleries and museums and produce a personal site of paintings, photos, drawings and other things at www.stickygum.com

For the past 6 years I have worked in a number of roles for various arts and community organisations. I have a strong dedication to community and social justice projects and was a founding member of the Octapod Association - a youth media and arts centre. The Octapod is responsible for (amongst many other projects) staging the "This Is Not Art" festival an international festival of alternative arts and media. Other community and cultural projects I have been involved with include producing my own weekly radio show on 2NUR community radio for 6 years, operating my own studio gallery, curating art shows, running the visual arts component of the Newcastle Fringe Festival and editing Opus Student Magazine at the University of Newcastle in addition to volunteering in the organisation of many local events. I have a demonstrated commitment to the arts and a strong understanding of diverse community organisations and projects.

RECENT WORK:

SPEAKOUT CREATIVE 05-07
- SpeakOut is an innovative charity that trains disadvantaged youth in design and computer skills in addition to producing workshops and programs in both regional and metropolitan Queensland. SpeakOut Creative (which I worked for) is a design agency that chanels its profits into the community work that the SpeakOut Organisation produces in addition to assisting with the design needs of the organisation as a whole. I was employed as part of a team of graphic designers working for a veriety of print and online projects.

STRANGE CARGO 06-07
- Strange Cargo was a touring exhibition of the Newcastle Regional Gallery. I produced all the design collatoral of the show including the invitations, wall text and imagery, Catalogue, advertising and website. I won an award from the Museum and galleries Association of Australia for the design of the invitation as well as receiving honourable mention in the category of website and catalogue design.

EYELINE MAGAZINE: 03-08
- Employed as designer for Eyeline magazine. Eyeline is a nationally distributed contemporary viusal arts magazine based in Brisbane.

DRAWING CENTRE: 05
- Hired by the Newcastle Region Art Gallery to design the exhibition catalogue for Drawing Centre - a survey of contemporary Australian Drawing.

AUTO FETISH: 04
- Hired by the Newcastle Region Art Gallery to design all visual material for the Auto Fetish exhibition including billboards, stickers, t-shirt, postcards, magazine advertisements and the exhibition catalogue.

NEWCASTLE FILM FESTIVAL: 04
- Designed all promotional material for the Newcastle Film Festival including website, postcard and film festival programme.

NAVIGATING NEWCASTLE: 04
- Designed and co-wrote the guide - an alternative tourist guide to Newcastle for the Newcastle City Council's tourism department.

3CR COMMUNITY RADIO MELBOURNE: 04
- Hired as co-designer to redesign the radio station's logo, newsletters and posters.

HOW TO / WHERE TO GUIDE: 03-04
- Employed by the Australia Council
as part of the writing team and co designer of a book detailing
how to produce an arts project for people aged 14 - 25.

SPINACH7 MAGAZINE: 03-04
- Hired as designer for Spinach7 magazine a publication focusing on alternative arts and culture, left wing politics and the asia pacific region.

SUMMER CINEMA: 03
Employed to design the posters, postcards and advertisements
for the Newcastle City Council's Summer Cinema in the park
program.

NOISE: Words and Pictures: 03
- Employed to design the noise festival's anthology of writing,
art and photography. The book is a 180 page collection of
fiction, poetry and visual works from young australians and
is distributed nationally in ABC stores.

THIS IS NOT ART FESTIVAL: 03
- Design of This Is Not Art website and 16 Page Tabloid
Program paper in addition to various advertisements and promotopnal
material.

IZILLA WEB PRODUCTION: 02-03
- Employed as a contractor producing graphic design services
for web and multimedia projects

- Design of This Is Not Art website and 42 Page Program
booklet in addition to fold out map and art directory.

TRINITY COLLEGE OF MUSIC, LONDON: March 01 - October 01
- Employed full time as Designer to the highly respected
London music college where responsibilities included the
following:
- - Design of concert publicity (including advertisements
for Music Magazines) for internal and external concerts given
in London and the South East of England. This involved print
buying and producing the posters and programmes within the
specified budget.
- - Design of miscellaneous College Stationary
- - Design of advertisements for production in various music
magazines and educational press
- - Maintenance and updates of the College website as instructed.
Research and liasing with companies into the implementation
of a content management system and redesign of the trinity
website.
- - Creation of a Logo for the Trinity affiliated Jerwood
Library of the performing arts.

OVEN DIGITAL UK: July 00 - January 01
- Employed full time as a Designer on web and multimedia
projects for Oven's London office where work included the
following:
- - Several pitches, analysing clients needs and formulating
a creative solution within a technical framework
- - Presentation Tool
- Worked on conceptualisation, useability and design of
a multimedia sever based presentation program. The first
stage of this project involved a great deal of liasing with
New York Office.
- - www.onecosmos.net
- a global, multi-office richmedia project (still in production).
Devised and implemented the process by which the illusion
of flying through space from one static supplied image to
the next could be achieved within the universe section of
the website.
- - Christmas card:
- Illustrated all images found within the interactive oven
Christmas card that allows the user to type a message they
wish to see Santa write in the snow for a friend.

OTHER WORK:

2000: {DESIGNER}NATIONAL YOUNG WRITERS FESTIVAL
Commissioned for the third year in
a row to design the program and advertising material for
the Australian National Young Writers Festival. All artwork,
design and layout produced
by myself. This involved liasing via the net and phone
linkups with the organising committee from London to Melbourne/Newcastle.
The program itself was printed in Sydney and all 64 pages
completed within the 5 day timeframe.

1993-2000: {PROGRAM PRODUCER/ PRESENTER} RADIO 2NUR FM
Producer and presenter of various weekly radio shows for the past 6 years on
radio in both Newcastle, Sydney and the Central Coast. (Assisted in the creation
of a youth radio station in the Gosford area - PCR FM ). The current Radio
show, the Soul Static Broadcast, has been broadcasting under various guises
every week for the past 5 years.

2000: {DESIGNER}JUICE.NET ONLINE MAGAZINE
Hired by Terraplane Press for a month's contract to design splash pages for
feature stories after a brief stint working on layout for HQ magazine.

2000: {DESIGNER} RECONCILIATION CONFERENCE POSTER AND CARDS
Commissioned by the Newcastle City Council to conceptualise and design posters
and postcards advertising the Past, Present Future Reconciliation Conference
and Festival.

2000: {DESIGNER} FBi RADIO POSTCARDS AND PROGRAM GRID.
Designed postcards advertising the launch party for the popular FBI radio (who
are currently seeking their broadcast license) in addition to cards and a
street press advert, promoting and presenting the months program guide.

2000: {DESIGNER} PALAIS ROYALE OPENING POSTCARDS
Commissioned by the Newcastle City Council to design and produce postcards
advertising and inviting audience to the opening of the Palais Royale youth
venue

1999: {CURATOR} WORD EXHIBITION
Curated "The Word" exhibition at the Newcastle regional Library's Lovett Gallery.
The exhibition was a collection of works in many mediums from artists around
Australia that utilise text elements in their composition.

1998-1999: {EDITOR + DESIGNER} OBJECT NOT FOUND
web site Object Not Found is a collection of found photographs, postcards and
letters from around the world. It is a museum of lost personal artifacts.
The web site has twice won a Yahoo Pick of the week and various other accolades.
Object Not Found is a personal labor of love and a constantly evolving collection.
It receives a small but steady 1,000 hits a month.

1999: {ILLUSTRATOR} ABC FUTURE EXCHANGE WEB SITE
Commissioned to create illustrations for articles on the ABC's Futures web
site. A Site investigating technology and society.

1999: {DESIGNER} D.E.E.T.Y.A. YOUTH INFORMATION CARDS
Commissioned to Produce wallet sized cards for several Hunter Areas detailing
important phone numbers for organizations of possible assistance.

1999/2000: {DESIGNER} SUMMER CINEMA
Commissioned by the Newcastle City Council and local ABC radio station 2NC
to design the promotional material for their outdoor night cinema program.

1998-1999: {DESIGNER / WEB CONSTRUCTION} COMMUNITY BROADCASTING
ASSOCIATION OF AUSTRALIA

Employed to construct and design web-page templates for the revitalization
of their www site.

1998-1999: {DESIGNER / WEB CONSTRUCTION}
CUT 'N PASTE

Employed to create the initial design structure and templates for the Cut 'N
Paste web site. Cut 'N Paste is a national touring exhibition of independent
media.

1998: {EDITOR / DESIGNER} OPUS
Elected editor and designer of Newcastle University's Student magazine Opus
for a one year term. This involved working with a $100,000 budget, negotiating
printing terms, employment of 4 other staff in addition to negotiating advertising
for the magazine.

1998 -2000: {DESIGNER} NATIONAL YOUNG WRITERS FESTIVAL
Commissioned to design and layout the National Young Writers Festival 1998,
99 and 2000 Program of events in addition to producing posters advertising
the events.

1998-1999: {DESIGNER} D.E.E.T.Y.A. SCHOOL LEAVER OPPORTUNITY
BOOK

Commissioned to design and produce a booklet detailing what employment and
education opportunity's exist for school leavers.

1998: {NSW EDITOR} NOISE ONLINE MAGAZINE
Employed to both edit and design the LOUD youth and media festival¹s online
magazine Noise in addition to the main page design for the overall site.

1998: {DESIGNER / ARTIST} LOUD
Commissioned to both design the cover of the Book Of Loud and create artworks
for the inside gallery and the splash page for the website.

1997-1998: {DESIGNER / EDITOR} NEW POLLUTION: NATIONAL ZINE
ANTHOLOGY

As part of the Loud festival, won the contract (with the
Pod) to produce a national zines anthology which involved
contacting and collecting zines nationwide and assembling
them into an interesting format that remained faithful to
their original look as well as including an instructional 'how
to guide' to making zines.

1997-1998: {VISUAL ARTS COORDINATOR } NEWCASTLE FRINGE FESTIVAL
Volunteer coordinator of the visual arts program for both the first and second
Newcastle Fringe Festival which saw the creation of Australia¹s first
Art Crawl - a series of 20+ consecutive exhibition openings on the one night,
exhibiting both established and unknown artists. An event that has been continued
by later following Fringe Festivals.

1995-1997: {CURATOR / COORDINATOR} ADYTUM STUDIO / GALLERY
Created and coordinated a free exhibition space for local disadvantaged artists.
Renovated from an old Butchers Shop in Cooks Hill, The Adytum Studio / Gallery
acted as an alternative to the other galleries in the area and put on 3 group
shows of local student and unemployed artists.

1998: {NSW EDITOR} NOISE ONLINE MAGAZINE
Employed to both edit and design the LOUD youth and media festival¹s online
magazine Noise in addition to the main page design for the overall site.
